Start Here: AI for Sales in Plain English

A calm, jargon free starting point for salespeople who are new to AI. Read this first, then follow the path one page at a time.

  • Reading time: 6 minutes
  • Last updated October 20, 2026

In 30 seconds

  • AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are writing and thinking partners. They are not search engines, and they are not magic.
  • Think of AI as a brilliant new hire on day one: smart about the world, but clueless about your company and your buyers until you tell it.
  • Most weak AI output comes from missing context, not from a bad tool.
  • Two habits keep you safe from day one: use your company approved account, and check every fact before a buyer sees it.
  • This page gives you a reading order, a quick check and a way to find the path that fits you.

Welcome

If AI feels like something everyone else figured out while you were busy hitting quota, you're in good company. Plenty of strong sellers haven't touched it yet, or tried it once, got a bland email back and gave up.

Here's the good news. Using AI well at work is a skill, not a talent. It's closer to learning your CRM than learning to code. You don't need a technical background. You need a few plain ideas, a safe place to practice and some real tasks from your own week.

This path gives you exactly that. Every page is short, written in plain English and built around sales work you already do: researching accounts, writing emails, prepping calls and updating the CRM. Read one page, try one thing, then come back for the next.

What AI is, in one minute

The AI tools you hear about run on large language models. A large language model learned from a huge amount of text, so it's very good at writing, summarizing and organizing ideas. It doesn't look things up on its own, and it doesn't know anything about your company unless you tell it.

That's why the same tool can give one rep a useless answer and another rep a great one. Look at the difference context makes.

Before: a request with no context

Write a cold email to a VP of Sales.

What comes back: a polite, generic email that could be sent to anyone. "I hope this finds you well" energy. No buyer would reply.

After: the same request with context

I'm a prospecting rep at Ramplight (a fictional company). We help sales teams ramp new reps faster with AI coaching. Write a cold email to the VP of Sales at Calder Freight Systems (also fictional). They just posted 12 prospecting job openings. Keep it under 90 words, lead with their hiring, and end with one low pressure question.

What comes back: a short email about their hiring push, with a clear reason to reply. Same tool, same minute. The only change was context.

Key idea

AI is a brilliant new hire on day one. It knows a lot about the world, and nothing about your business, until you tell it.

What this path covers

The Level 1 path walks you through six big ideas, in order:

  1. How AI works, in plain words, and why it sometimes gets things confidently wrong.
  2. Your first real session, step by step, on a task from your own week.
  3. How to ask well, so you get specific answers instead of generic ones.
  4. How to stay safe: which data can go into which tool, and how much checking each task needs.
  5. What AI can't do, so you know where your judgment matters most.
  6. How to talk about it at work, including with your manager.

  1. A rep asks AI for "a cold email to a VP of Sales" and gets something generic. What's the most likely cause?

Answer: Missing context. The tool didn't know who the rep is, what they sell, who the buyer is or why now. Adding those details usually fixes it.

  2. True or false: if AI states a fact confidently, it's probably correct.

Answer: False. AI can state a wrong fact with full confidence. Check every fact against a source you opened yourself before a buyer sees it.

  3. You want help summarizing notes from a customer call. Where should you do it?

Answer: Only in your company approved AI workspace. Call notes about customers aren't for personal accounts or random free tools.

FAQ

Do I need to be technical to use AI for sales?

No. If you can write an email and use a CRM, you can use AI well. The skill is mostly clear writing and good judgment, which sellers already practice every day.

Which AI tool should I start with?

Start with whichever tool your company has approved. The skills on this path work in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, so learning in one transfers to the others.

Will AI replace sales reps?

AI is taking over repetitive work such as first drafts, research summaries and note cleanup. Live conversations, judgment and relationships stay human, and reps who use AI well get more time for exactly that work.

Is it safe to put customer information into AI?

Only in your company approved workspace, and only the kinds of data your policy allows. Never paste customer data into a personal account or a free tool you found online.

How long does it take to get comfortable with AI?

Most people feel the shift after a few real tasks, not after weeks of study. Your first hour is the biggest step, which is why we built a guide just for it.
