What Is an AI Sales Agent?
An AI sales agent (often called an AI SDR) is software that uses AI agents to research, write and send prospecting outreach with limited human input. It's a software category, not a human sales development rep (prospecting rep) who uses AI. Vendors pitch it as a way to run parts of outbound without a rep writing each message.
In 30 seconds
- It finds prospects, researches them, writes outreach and can send on its own.
- Judge one on five things: data sources, verification, review before sending, deliverability and data handling.
- Autonomy without verification doesn't remove risk. It moves the risk onto your brand.
Why AI sales agents matter in sales
An AI sales agent writes under your company's name, so every message is a first impression nobody on your team read. If it repeats a hallucination, like a wrong title or an event that never happened, the buyer sees it first.
Scale multiplies the damage. One bad template sent to hundreds of buyers is hundreds of bad impressions, and careless volume can push even your good emails into spam.
AI sales agent vs a prospecting rep who uses AI
Scroll sideways to see the whole table.
| AI sales agent (software) | Prospecting rep who uses AI (person) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who writes | The tool | AI drafts; the rep edits |
| Who checks facts | Whoever reviews drafts, if the tool has a review step | The rep, before anything sends |
| Who sends | Often the tool, on a schedule | The rep |
How to evaluate an AI sales agent
Ask every vendor these five questions, get the answers in writing and check current documentation.
- Data sources. Where does its prospect data come from, and how current is it?
- Verification. How does it check facts, and can you see the source for every claim?
- Review before sending. Can a rep approve each message, and can you pause it instantly?
- Deliverability. How does it protect your domain, cap volume and honor unsubscribes and email laws?
- Data handling. How is your CRM data stored, used and deleted, and does it train models?
Red flags: no review step, vague data answers and success measured in emails sent, not meetings held.
Example
A trial in review mode (all names fictional)
Tallyline trialed an AI sales agent for two weeks with sending turned off. Jordan, a prospecting rep, reviewed every draft.
One draft to Nora Bell, VP of Finance at Calder Freight Systems, congratulated Calder on "its new Montreal office." Calder's press release says it is opening a new office in Toronto, and the tool showed no source. Another draft offered "a free 60 day pilot," which Tallyline doesn't offer; the tool had never seen Tallyline's seller context file.
Neither reached Calder, and the team made "a source for every claim" a requirement.
Check drafts like these in your company approved assistant.
Prompt
Check an AI sales agent draft before it sends
Below is a draft our AI sales agent wrote to Nora Bell, VP of Finance at Calder Freight Systems, plus the Calder press release I opened myself. List every claim about Calder or Tallyline. Mark each SUPPORTED (quote the press release or my seller context file) or NOT SUPPORTED. Flag any offer, price or product feature. Don't rewrite the email.Common misconceptions
- "Turning on review defeats the point." Review is what makes a trial safe. Autonomy should grow only as fast as trust does.
- "More emails means more meetings." Volume doesn't make outreach better. Relevance does.
Key idea
If no one reviews it, no one stands behind it. Keep a person between the draft and the buyer.

A vendor says its AI sales agent runs outbound with no one reviewing messages. What do you ask first?
Answer: Can a rep approve each message before it sends? Without that, every error goes straight to buyers.
True or false: an AI sales agent is a prospecting rep who uses AI.
Answer: False. An AI sales agent is software. A prospecting rep who uses AI is a person who reviews the work.
FAQ
What does an AI sales agent do?
An AI sales agent finds prospects, researches them, writes outreach and, depending on its settings, sends messages and handles replies. Check each vendor's current documentation.
How is an AI sales agent different from an AI sales assistant?
An AI sales agent is built to act on its own, while an AI sales assistant helps a rep who stays in control and decides what gets sent.
Should an AI sales agent send outreach without review?
No, an AI sales agent shouldn't send outreach without review. Let the tool prepare drafts, and have a person approve every message a buyer will see.
